Fall Bucket List #3: Roast Pumpkin Seeds
Third thing to mark off my Fall Bucket List - roasting pumpkin seeds!
Confession time: These were disgusting.
How? Well, this is what happened.
When I carved my pumpkin, I kept the seeds in a little baggie (which I left at my friends' house, who so sweetly cleaned them off for me). But, alas, the week I carved my pumpkin was swamped and I never got the chance to bust them out to roast.
Before I knew it, that little baggie of harmless seeds had become a science experiment. The seeds split and green stems emerged from them. Little roots raced along the bottom of the baggie. They were growing! I seriously contemplated planting them in a pot outside so we could grow our own pumpkins next year. But after doing some research, I learned that they would quickly die in the upcoming frost, even though Texas frost is a little dainty. So, with great sadness, I tossed them.
Where did these seeds come from, you might be wondering? Well, the grocery store. Yes, the grocery store. Under the florescent lights of capitalism came our little heroes. They looked so cute and ready to be roasted.
But, quite frankly, their looks didn't live up to their taste. They were styrofoamy and did not roast well. After coming out of the oven, they were burnt to a not delicious crisp and tasted now like burnt styrofoam.
I'm not blaming the recipe. I blame the cardboard seeds. And maybe my inability to cook a little bit too.
How's your fall bucket list coming along? Winter is almost here - I've better hurry up on this list! My goal is to finish it before Thanksgiving!
